Recently, I felt like getting a free webhost, seeing as how several people have turned to DynDNS, I thought I may as well use that. Any idea on how to set it up, and any limitations though? I've read through the site, not much help...

It's not a free webhost, it just gives you a web address, you still have to run your own server, most people use Apache.

So... ideas...

First of all, I would check your ISP, make sure they allow use of port 80, I was not able to set up a server from my computer due to that, so I ended up wasting a ton of time, only to find out they were stopping me the whole time.

I'm just here to find a good webhost... or at least, something that's free.

What do you plan on doing, do you want to have your own server and be able to use PHP commands and other such things, or are you planning on a read-only site?

Whatever needs to be done. Currently its just for posting random stuff and archiving a few things and hosting random stuff so my friends can quickly get files. I started off getting the idea when I looked at Farty's site, and realized, "Something that will stay forever, and MSN can't screw me over with".

I can walk you through the process of setting up a working server in more or less an hour if you are motivated and can think well.

If you're just looking for webhosting, try that. There is no need for you to make your own server.

Yeah, if you were looking at Farty's site, his is a read-only site, although he has it on a server. I've been using GooglePages, and that's worked out nicely, Yahoo has Geocities, and Google has something different now, they're good for read-only sites.

Woah dont use Geocities. You get a MB bandwidth limit and you can only have 10 ".html" files.

Hmm, I have a relative grasp now, Who knows Java//PhP//SQL? And would they be willing to teach me?

It hasn't.
I tried it recently (don't ask me why) and it was like "5MB storage, 1MB bandwidth, your own blog and an image gallery ALL FOR FREE!"
No php, sql, heck, not even CSS I think.
It really disappointed me

w3schools.com is a nice website, I learned a lot off of it, and more detailed stuff can be learned by googling random tutorials. I would also learn CSS while you're at it, it's very handy, and it's javascript, not Java



Of course you can do CSS, all it is is a simpler way of having a website-wide theme that is easily changeable, but the others are true of most read-only hosts.

Also, you can have unlimited HTML files, there's just a bandwidth limit that sucks and the 5 MB files, I like google better anyway

I still suggest x10hosting.com to anyone... 300MB upload, MySQL, PHP, e-mail address, no ads.... FREE!! Just have to log onto their forums once every two weeks or it gets disabled.. But then you just ask to undisable, and it's back. I love it.

Majority of these websites, I've already heard of. Java, Javascript. Eh, it basically refers to the same thing.

Edit: For example, is there anything else required to produce a webpage? I originally started just for screw around purposes, but now, I wanna try something.
For example, people have suggested using: FrontPage, javascript and Flash. Is there anything else though?
